Global Health Elective

Our Global Health Elective provides learners a 4-6 week rotation  in rural Kenya  (Bware,  Migori and Homa Bay).   Learners participate in a wide variety of medical experiences, from local primary care clinics to hospitals, both public and private.  They  also participate in ongoing community development  and education projects of ROHF in  Bware. Check out   the latest student blog!! as well as a great article from  volunbteers Kate Ketcham and James Lanz about their eperience as preceptors and volunteers… Public Health Nurses in Kenya,

Each rotation begins with an in country orientation  in Nairobi which includes an overview of the Kenya medical system, volunteer safety, Kiswahili lessons, a primer on tropical medicine and a cultural orientation. In addition students have the opportunity to visit our primary health clinic   and visit with our community outreach program in the slum of Kawangware.

WHAT WOULD A HEALTH PROJECT BE WITHOUT SUPPLIES????

In preparation for our trips we collect medical supplies, medical textbooks and equipment from local hospitals. The donations keep flowing in. Before each trip we come together to sort and pack this precious cargo. Each student carries a 50# bag with them to Kenya. It might seem like a small drop in the bucket but collectively we have brought more than 4000 pounds  of supplies to Kenya in the last 5 years! The Packing Party often attracts volunteers who cannot go to Kenya but still want to contribute their time and energy… give us a call and join our efforts to bring much needed resources to  Kenya!

A special thanks goes to the nurses and techs on Labor and Deliver at Silverton Hospital-  over 10 years of giving to Ray of Hope and still going strong!!!  We cannot even begin to THANK YOU!!!!!!
